South Dublin Historical Mapping Website Shortlisted for Award

The innovative website Connecting to the Past: Mapping South Dublin County in Time has been shortlisted for a Chambers’ Ireland Excellence in Local Government Award 2010. The site allows users to browse series of historical maps of South Dublin County from Rocque’s map (1760) through various series of maps up to current OS mapping and aerial photography.

The site makes the hardcopy maps of the Local Studies section of South Dublin Libraries available 24/7 in a user-friendly format. No more ploughing through large sheets of maps – one click takes you from the same location on one map to the same location on another map. The site features the following maps: Aerial Photography (2009), GSGS 4136 (1942), GSGS 3906 (1940), Fourth Edition six inch maps (1935-38), Third Edition six inch maps (1911-12), First Edition six inch maps (1843), Duncan (1821), Taylor (1816) and Rocque (1760).

The site allows users to search by address or townland or to simply browse.

You can access this historical mapping site from the South Dublin Libraries Local Studies page or from here.
